Spotsylvania Towne Centre
|
Spotsylvania Towne Centre (formerly Spotsylvania Mall) is an enclosed shopping mall in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. It is located just outside the corporate limits of the City of Fredericksburg. It was built in 1980 by the Cafaro Co. of Youngstown, Ohio, who still owns and operates the mall.
Development In 1991, the mall was expanded and renovated to add more shops and another anchor store, Hecht's (now Macy's), to the existing Sears, Leggett (now Belk), and Montgomery Ward (now occupied by Costco). Skylights and fountains increased daylighting. In the late nineties, additional renovations added carpeted lounge-type areas at intersections (with various greenery and high-backed chairs), as well as removed the central carousel that had been present since the mall's opening.
As of 2005, the mall is undergoing a major $122 million renovation and expansion. Interior and exterior of the existing building have been completely renovated, changing the color scheme to more natural colors, and the entrances to the mall have been replaced with more striking architecture.
The expansion of the mall will include a 14 screen Muvico Theaters with stadium seating, an open-air "lifestyle center" for new upscale stores, a Residence Inn hotel, and improvements to the entrances on Virginia State Route 3, which are currently under construction. The majority of these additions and improvements are scheduled to be completed by September 2008.
