Marley Station

Marley Station is a shopping mall located in Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, off of Maryland Route 100 and Governor Ritchie Highway (also known as Maryland Route 2). It opened in August 1987. At the time Marley Station was advertised as an upscale shopping destination. The mall's grand opening and boasted two main anchors that were at the time, Hecht's and Macy's. Macy's New Jersey division, Bamberger's, had recently rebranded all stores as Macy's. The mall also had such high end stores as Banana Republic (with a Jeep through the front of the store), The Gap, Hoffritz for Cutlery, Bailey Banks and Biddle, Contempo Casuals, Eddie Bauer, Williams-Sonoma, Britches Great Outdoors, The Limited, and several other men's and women's clothing stores. The mall also boosted several other restaurants such as Friendly's, Vie De France, Gloria Jean's Coffee, and Arby's. Harundale Mall, which was about a mile and a half from Marley Station, was severely hurt by this new elaborate mall. After Marley opened, the thirty year-old Harundale Mall quickly lost almost half of their business. Several stores started closing that had been in the Harundale for years. In 1994, J.C. Penney opened, and in 1996 Sears also built a store at the mall and relocated there. Then, before Christmas 2000, with the opening of Arundel Mills, Marley Station met the same fate as Harundale. It has experienced competition from the nearby Arundel Mills mall since then. Several stores that were in Marley have left including Eddie Bauer, The Limited, The Gap, CVS, and The Bombay Company. Both malls were owned by the Mills Corporation, which was also recently acquired. SIMON properties now owns the mall. Presently, Marley is viewed as more of a "discount" mall. This is reflected in the majority of the current "mom-and-pop" retail tenants that occupy the property. These include dollar stores, discount hair products, check cashing several other stores that fit the discount format.

Due to the buyout of May Department Stores by Federated Department Stores, Marley Station's Hecht's store was converted to a Macy's store in early May 2006, and the anchor location formerly occupied by Macy's was converted into a Boscov's on October 27, 2006.
