Spending diet

The term "Spending Diet" was popularized by the frequent newspaper articles based on the family in North Carolina featured in the Cleveland newspaper. During the month long Spending Diet the family was able to coupon and save money. In the wake of the 2009-2010 recessions, after the housing bubble burst and unemployment almost doubled Americans became more concerned with saving money. As politicians sought to correct the government's spending habits, the drive for personal finance reform gained popularity.
As saving money and cutting back became popular, many individuals, couples, families, and organizations began adopting the Spending Diet Guidelines. People and organizations started to individualize their own Spending Diets and determined varying time lengths for their own Spending Diets. The only exception might be necessary expenses such as utilities or operating costs.
