Sonopia

Sonopia is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Service officially launched in the U.S. in April 2007 with idea to “democratize” mobile wireless phone service by enabling any organization, group, club or individual to launch and manage their own branded mobile community quickly, easily and free of charge.

Sonopia was created as an answer to a common mobile subscriber lament: is a response to what sonopia’s founders saw as a gap in what consumers want and what the major mobile carriers are able to provide, namely, a highly personalized wireless service for literally any kind of affinity, cause or community. Combined with focus on easy access to exclusive affinity content (both online and on the handset), the continuing progression of convergence in social networking and content availability, as well as dissatisfaction with the Big Four’s customer service.

The massive popularity and success of affinity-based products like MBNA credit cards. Growing desire by consumers to support socially-responsible, causes, or brands that reflect what is important to them. The highly-penetrated and slowing growth of wireless subscribers, and large wireless carriers’ inability to tailor their offerings to niche market segments. The growing need by organizations and marketers to reach consumers through more personalized, non-traditional marketing channels. High-speed wireless networks that support greater service differentiation through richer mobile content and branding. Web 2.0 including social networking and user-generated content.

Sonopia was named by Fierce Wireless to its prestigious list of ‘Fierce 15’ top wireless companies for 2007.

The company is based in Menlo Park, California with offices in Kyiv, New York and Los Angeles.
