Many laparoscopic specialties make up the group, with the main four identified as Surgical Endoscopy, OB/GYN Laparoscopy, Endourology and Computer Assisted or Robotic Surgery. SLS’ approach is multispecialty, allowing multidisciplinary education. SLS produces an academic journal, textbooks and websites.
Vision
SLS advocates and supports the research and development of minimally invasive procedures, as opposed to conventional open surgery. Minimally invasive surgery has been found to be safer than open surgery, and allows patients to recover faster and heal with less pain and scarring. Minimally invasive surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis or requires only a short hospital stay. a multispecialty conference of a number of MIS Societies, with the goal of increasing knowledge of laparoscopic, endoscopic, and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Open Access
SLS advocates for free, open access material in order to promote research and education. SLS claims to believe this unrestricted on line access to scholarly research promotes social equality through access to academic research and facilitates advancement in many academic areas. It also makes research available to the maximum number of readers worldwide.
Publications
The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons is the owner and publisher of the Journal of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (JSLS). According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the JSLS non-profit model has reached more than 1 million downloads from PubMedCentral in 2015.
