Socialist Party (Italy, 2007, De Michelis)

The Socialist Party (, PS) was a tiny social-democratic political party in Italy, led by Mauro Del Bue (secretary) and Gianni De Michelis (president).
History
In June 2007 the New Italian Socialist Party (NPSI, officially "Socialist Party New PSI"), founded in January 2001 by former members of the Italian Socialist Party, split among those who wanted to participate in the "Socialist constituent assembly" along with other social-democratic parties (the Italian Democratic Socialists, The Italian Socialists, the Association for the Rose in the Fist and other groups) and those who wanted to maintain the allegiance to the House of Freedoms coalition. The first group was headed by Gianni De Michelis and Mauro Del Bue, the second one by Stefano Caldoro and Lucio Barani.
The two factions elected their secretary in two separate congresses: on 24 June Caldoro was elected secretary by the right-wing faction of the party, while on 7-8 July Del Bue and De Michelis were elected respectively secretary and president by those members who wanted to take part to the foundation of the Socialist Party, whose first meeting took place on 14 July. In practice, for some time the party had two secretaries.
Anyway, on 23 June the two groups had already acknowledged the irreconcilability of their political choices and agreed on a consensual separation: according to the agreement the group of Caldoro and Barani would be called "New PSI", while the group of De Michelis and Del Bue would be called "Socialist Party".
Subsequently, on 24 October 2007, the two MEPs elected on the United Socialists for Europe list in the 2004 European Parliament election, De Michelis and Alessandro Battilocchio, joined the Socialist Group in the European Parliament.
On 5 October 2007 the "Socialist Party", which never acted publicly as such, joined the new Socialist Party (later renamed "Italian Socialist Party").
