Skill set

A skill set is a set of skills. Typically, they are a bundle of complementary skills required to perform a task, role or job effectively. For example, the driver of a fire engine should have good psychomotor skills so that they can drive the vehicle safely, navigate to an emergency quickly and then locate essential features such as a fire hydrant.<ref name=fo/>
Different roles require different sets of skills. Senior staff in the US civil service were surveyed to determine the skills required for a collaborative style of management. The expectation was that strategic skills would be most valued but the most highly-rated skills were the personal qualities of open-mindedness and patience.<ref name=par/>
Skills sets can be evaluated by tests and examinations which will typically consist of a series of questions or challenges. Each item may involve several skills and so there may then be difficulty in determining the likely level and contribution of each skill.<ref nameks/> To assist educators in summarising the skill profiles of the students from such test results, cluster analysis with a method may be used.<ref namek/>
Employers commonly require and specify the skill sets needed for particular positions in their organisation. Their HR staff and managers will then usually try to match the skill sets of candidates with the skill sets required for those positions.<ref namebp/> Clustering analysis can be used on job specification data to determine the sets of skills required for jobs which are in demand.<ref nameACM/> To improve the employment prospects for new graduates, the curriculum of degree courses can be designed to provide the students with a matched set of skills.<ref name=E&T/>
