Skilf

Skilf started out in the days of UK Garage, his early inspiration came from mc’s such as Creed, Viper, PSG, CKP, Pay As You Go, and Heartless crew. His original alias was Skilful G, a name which was used all throughout his garage and drum ‘n’ bass years..

Skilf was always destined to be a performer; he attended drama classes from a very young age and after leaving secondary school, studied Performing Arts at West Herts College. It during this time that his skills as an MC really began to take shape. At the tender ago of 16 he was already performing in London nightclubs alongside his close friend and musical counterpart DJ Subzero.

In 2003 Skilf moved from Watford to Brighton, and undertook a BA in Drama and Cultural studies at Sussex University. He adapted his style to drum ‘n’ bass and became a resident at Devotion, where he supported artists such as Andy C, DJ Zinc, Pendulum, Dillinja, Grooverider, Mampi Swift, Nicky Blackmarket, Kenny Ken, DJ Marky, MC Dynamite, IC3, and Foxy to name a few .

As time went on Skilf moved away from the drum 'n' bass scene, and made his mark as a UK rapper. His earliest recordings with DJ Subzero were in circulation around 2004-5 but are now extremely rare. While at Sussex University he met Gwilo who was instrumental in Skilf's switch to hip hop, they would later go on to form a crew with Baraka and DJ Downlow called ‘The Connection’. Skilf’s first official release was a 12" in 2005 called the '9 Months EP,' produced by Dom and Crookedman, released through Clandestine Cultivations.

Following this release Skilf became resident at Brighton’s biggest night through Blaze promotions, playing on the same bills as Ghostface Killah, Tim Westwood, Task Force, Killa Kella, Phi Life Cypher, Harry Love etc. At this time he was also a resident at Dub Pressure Brighton’s monthly Dubstep night, which is still going strong to this day.

At the beginning of 2007 Skilf's debut Original Visions was released through Clandestine Cultivations, it was well received by various publicationsand received a lot of airplay from different radio stations. Skilf has also performed on a number of stations such as Freeze FM, Sub FM, and HHB radio. The music video for "It's Skilf" was also released around this time and can now be viewed on youtube and other internet sites.

In the summer of 2007 Skilf and his newly established band Astro Physics did a mini summer tour at many different venues around the country; including at Café De Paris, The Hope and Anchor, Joogleberry Playhouse, Leonards, The Grassroots festival in Hull, The Contact Theatre in Manchester and a support slot for Pendulum at Coventry University.
