Shumona Roy Biswas was a noted ghazal singer. She hails from a family of talented musicians. During her long stay in Lucknow, she learned the nuances of Urdu as well as music from her father, Vinod Kumar Chatterjee. She obtained informal training in Thumri, Dadra, and Ghazal from Pandit Birju Maharaj. She was also a disciple of noted ghazal singer Begum Akhtar,<ref name="tribune" /> which accounts for her style of Ghazal singing. She recorded two ghazal albums - the first was an album of Mirza Ghalib's ghazals, the second included ghazals by Daagh Dehlvi. She was a ″Grade A″ artist at Air India Radio and Doordarshan.
