Shawn Stratton

Shawn Stratton is a leadership consultant, speaker, adventurer, and long-distance runner based in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. He was one of the athletes who witnessed and completed the Boston Marathon just before the explosions on April 15, 2013. Stratton is founder and past committee chair of the Paradise Triathlon and the past president of the Newfoundland Association of Professional Speakers.
Early life and education
Shawn Stratton was diagnosed with dyslexia at age nine. Growing up in the Boys Scouts, Stratton developed his interest in outdoor adventure. Stratton got his Bachelors degree in Recreation from Dalhousie University in 1998 and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University in Colwood, British Columbia in 2013. While completing his undergraduate degree, he worked with the North Carolina-based Outward Bound organization where he spent a couple of summers at a camp in Alberta, leading trips into the Rockies. Stratton spent 4 years preparing for his chance to take an Instructor Course with National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), USA. He was selected to join NOLS at the age of 24 as an instructor.
Career
Stratton has spent 15 years on wilderness expeditions, 10 of them as an instructor with the National Outdoor Leadership School. As a senior instructor with the U.S. based-NOLS and other international organizations, he has led mountaineering, backpacking, kayaking and canoeing trips in (IB1) remote wilderness locations in about 25 countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, India, Nepal, Ecuador, Thailand, Kenya and Iceland. Stratton saw early success when he was published in The Telegram in September 2002 & July 2003 and The Leader in February 2003 for climbing Canada’s highest mountain, Mt. Logan and his unique lifestyle of leading expeditions. In 2007, he founded the company LiveMore where he first organized international educational expeditions. He is now a leadership and teambuilding consultant and professional speaker. In 2012 Shawn was the first speaker in the inaugural St. John's TEDx event. He has completed 40 triathlons including two Ironman competitions and the 2013 Boston Marathon. Stratton authored Teams on the Edge in 2013, a book that provides details of his experiences in wilderness expeditions and from which he derives leadership lessons.
