Sharmini Peries

Sharmini Peries is currently Executive Director, Independent World Television - The Real News Network, (2006- ). Ms. Peries was an economic and political affairs journalist. She has served as Executive Director of the following institutions: International Freedom of Expression Exchange/Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, the Royal Commission on Systemic Racism in the Criminal Justice System (Appointed by the Governor General of Canada), the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants and Manager, Human Rights Code Review Task Force in Ontario. Most recently she was Trade/ Foreign Affairs Advisor to the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez. She was the Head of Development for: The Leading Solutions to Equality and Justice for the Association of Women in Development and founding member of Women in Conflict Zones Network (WIZNET) - an international women's research network based at York University in Toronto. Appointed by the Premier, she served on the Governing Council of the Professional Engineers of Ontario.
