Sharad Borkar

Born on 23 June 1950 to parents Mangesh and Durga Borkar, Sharad Borkar started a career in sports and took keen interest in the game of volleyball at the age of 24. In 1974-75, he captained the Parle college (now known as Sathaye college) which then won the Bombay University Championship. In the same year he was given the captainship of the Bombay University Volleyball Team. He was also selected for Indian University Tournaments in volleyball. He was the first Goan to be selected to represent Goa at the All India University Coaching camp and All India Volleyball camp at Bangalore on 15 June 1975. He has played for Salcette Spikers Raia, Mala Sports Club, M.R.C. Sports Club, R.C. of Customs and Central Excise and Goa Police Sports Club which won major tournaments in Goa.
He represented the Goa Volleyball Team that participated in the Nationals held at Bangalore in 1974, Kerala in 1975, Madras in 1976, Calcutta in 1977 and Baroda in 1979. He captained the Goa Civil Service Volleyball team at Agartala in 1977, and was also adjudged as the Best Player of the 12th All India Civil Service Volleyball Championship; also represented the championship at Allahabad in 1979.
He has been awarded with many prestigious awards for his contribution and excellence in Volleyball, one of them being the Bakshi Bahadur Jivbadada Kerkar Award.
He has been an important and honourable volleyball player of Goa also representing India in many matches from 1974-1985. His contribution to Indian volleyball has been extremely prodigious. He has been honoured by many eminent people like Mrs Margaret Alva and Mr Pandurang Raut among many others.He has also been the recipient of Goa State Cultural And Sports Awards for many consecutive years.
Even though he passed away in 2008 after a fierce battle against cancer, he still continues to be an inspiration for all those working towards pursuing a career in Sports and Volleyball.
