Growing up in Ventura County, California Shannon McComb has been working to save the environment since the young age of 8 years old. Shannon has made many speeches and testified before federal and state agencies such as, California State Lands Commission, California Coastal Commission, U.S. Maritime Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Transportation, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Shannon was recognized for her outstanding achievements by the Sierra Club, Earth Alert, and many local groups. She was the recipient of the Equinox Award from Earth Alert and the Environmental Hero Of the Year Award from the Sierra Club, presented to her on June 8, 2008 by California Lt. Governor Garamendi. At the event, she said, "Politicians are always saying they're doing good things for us, but they don't ask us what we want. I want to be a voice for children and for others who can't speak up for themselves." Garamendi only had kind words for Shannon such as, "Shannon is a remarkable young woman. She helped focus my attention on the problems of LNG as a fuel source." "We're blessed with a new group of leaders that will replace those of us that will eventually move on — and they are exemplified by Shannon," Garamendi said. She received these honors at the age of 13 because of her work opposing the importation of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and for her ongoing efforts to help the environment. Her hopes for the future are to become an environmental lawyer, and the first female President. Lt. Governor Garamendi stated he would not be surprised to see her on the national stage. She has been helping environmental causes for five years, and she will continue her efforts, with the inspiration of her family and the people of her community. She has made significant contributions to protect California's coastal, water and land resources, and has been inspiring young people to participate in their government and to provide a voice for those unheard.
