Shane Told (born February 13, 1981) is a Canadian musician who is the lead vocalist, keyboardist, main lyricist, and one of the founding members of the post-hardcore band Silverstein and the owner of Verona Records. Biography Early life Told attended White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville. He started to love music at the age of ten when he first listened to Black Album by Metallica, this album made him start playing the acoustic guitar and, later, the electric. Told went on to enroll at the University of Guelph, studying genetics, molecular biology and some music courses. However, he later dropped his studies in April 2003 to devote himself full-time to music. Jerk Circus Told's first band was a punk rock band called Jerk Circus, where he was the lead vocalist and the guitarist. The band formed in Oakville in the late 1990s. The band had success in their local area but failed to reach any mainstream success with their album Never Mind The Suburbs and the follow-up EP Everything's A Travesty With You. The band later broke up near the end of 2002 because the members wished to pursue other paths. Both Jerk Circus albums were re-released in 2014 on Told's Verona Records label. Silverstein Told's second and primary band is Silverstein, a post-hardcore band who have achieved success around the world. Told became one of the founding members of Silverstein, along with Joshua Bradford, Paul Koehler and Richard McWalter. In that same year, they released their first EP Summer's Stellar Gaze with Told on bass as well as vocals. This first EP had no screamed vocals on it whatsoever and it wasn't until 2002 and the release of When the Shadows Beam that Told began utilising unclean vocals in Silverstein's music. After the release of the first two EPs, Silverstein attracted the attention of Victory Records who signed them in October 2002. With the new signing, Silverstein went into the studio to record their debut full-length album When Broken Is Easily Fixed. The album was released on May 20, 2003 and sold more than 200,000 copies surpassing the expectations of the band. Silverstein went on to release Discovering the Waterfront, Arrivals & Departures, A Shipwreck In the Sand, Rescue and This Is How the Wind Shifts as studio albums. The band has also released a "mini album" Short Songs and a live album. In 2014, Silverstein signed to Rise Records and started recording their seventh studio album I Am Alive In Everything I Touch. The record was officially announced on the 10th of November 2014 and is to be released Spring 2015. Other At the 2014 Alternative Press APMAs, Told, along with Caleb Shomo and Spencer Chamberlain presented the award for Best Drummer. Vocal style Told possesses a tenor vocal range and he uses the power fry technique for screaming. Told's singing ability has evolved significantly through the years he has acted as Silverstein's lead vocalist, including his screaming style. In the beginning of Silverstein, and whilst in Jerk Circus, Told utilised high screams but as of Discovering the Waterfront his screams have been lower. Told only began singing when one of his former bands had no lead vocalist and "he was the only guy that could carry a tune". Influences Told's influences include The Promise Ring, Orchid, Dead Kennedys, Green Day, Descendents, NOFX, Good Clean Fun, Chixdiggit and Gorilla Biscuits, who were all covered on Short Songs record. He has also stated that Metallica is the band that introduced him to rock music and what made him learn the guitar. Personal life Told has been in a relationship with his girlfriend Nia Pavesi for a long time after they met in 2006 after a show. They didn't see each other again for many years until they reconciled through mutual friends. Told is 5 foot 9 inches tall. He currently lives in Toronto.
