Shameem Reza is a Bangladesh-born educator, communicologist, human rights promoter, and media personality. He taught at the University of Dhaka. Reza is well known for his international work for media and communication policies and for promoting community radio for development, alternative public sphere and expression of free speech. He is known as a commentator on media, political and contemporary global issues and talked about improving human rights and free media, and the state of public participation in politics in the country. As adjunct, Reza also taught in few other universities. In his media interviews, Reza defends free speech against censorship. In his essays and books he has introduced the importance of free and independent media to spread free speech and journalism to the country. Early life and education Reza was born in Bangladesh. His father, now a retired public servant was well known for his service to the Bangladesh Government. Reza grew up to be recognized as a brilliant student. He was one of the top exam scorers in his district and that earned him a scholarship at elementary and junior high school level. After graduating from Cadet College he did his undergrad in the University of Dhaka. During his university days he was part of the Dhaka University Debating Society where he gained his initial reputation by winning national and international debating competitions.
