Shalito is a refreshing summer cocktail which became popular in the United States during the spring of 2007.
A Shalito is traditionally made of three ingredients: vodka, carbonated water (soda water) and muddled mint. In its simplest form the mint flavors are intended to mask the kick of vodka, and have made this clear cocktail a popular summer drink. Many restaurants and hotels like to create it with their own interpretation by adding lime juice, sugar, or tonic water, the Shalito in its purest form should stay true to its simple yet sophisticated flavor.
To make a Shalito: 2-3 ice cubes along with mint leaves are placed in a tall glass. The mixture is then gently mashed repeatedly with a muddler. Ice cubes (not crushed ice) is then added, followed by vodka. The mixture of mint, ice and vodka is then shaken and topped off with club soda.
The word Shalito is derived from the creator of the drink, Shalin Suresh Amin. Make sure to ask for it by name.
