Starfox: Shadows of Lylat is a space simulation / space shooter computer game developed by the SoL Team. It is a 3rd-party freeware game made by a group of fans of the Star Fox series. Shadows of Lylat has been under work for a long period of time. It uses the FreeSpace 2 Open Engine and has incorporated many new processes such as rail missions and planet-side missions. Plot Star Fox: Shadows of Lylat takes place during the span between Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Adventures. Not much has been revealed about the storyline of the game, but what has been released is that certain areas (such as Corneria) will be returning from the previous games. Judging also from screenshots released from the Shadows of Lylat forum page, ships such as the Assault Cruiser (Star Fox 64) and the Cornerian Fighter (Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Command) will be returning and will be heavily modified from their original models. Because the game is unofficial, Shadows of Lylat is not canon.
Vehicles Screenshots have shown versions of the Arwing (from Star Fox 64 up to Star Fox: Assault) will be implemented, as well as the SNES version of the Arwing.
The Wolfen from Star Fox: Assault has been confirmed by DaBrain as a Multiplayer vehicle. Whether this is an indicator that Star Wolf may be playable in Single Player or if this is just an added section to the Multiplayer is not yet confirmed.
Multiplayer Very little information has been released concerning the Multiplayer portion of Shadows of Lylat. However, certain screenshots from the Shadows of Lylat forums have shown a limited version of Multiplayer. In-game modes that will be included are Co-op, Team vs Team Deathmatch / Contest, and Dogfight.
More recently, project designer DaBrain has revealed that you will be able to communicate with others vocally over Multiplayer mode. The full extent of this has not yet been revealed.
Technical details The upgraded FreeSpace 2 engine is a cross platform engine with support for PC, Linux and Mac OS. Due to the advances of the engine, Shadows of Lylat is expected to have high system requirements. For full graphical quality a pixel shader 3.0 card with at least 256 MB ram is required. As minimum requirement a fast T&L card with 64 MB ram is expected to be needed.
Q-Games's Response to Shadows of Lylat During the earlier steps of SoL's production, many were concerned that Nintendo would revoke the game and have it shut down for some form of copyright infringement. However Dylan Cuthbert made a statement concerning SoL, published on 4colorrebellion.com:
Well, as long as they don't try to make money from it, it is "fan-art" and ok as far as I'm aware.
I think I saw a video on YouTube a while back and it looked interesting in a hard core kind of way, but I haven't seen any recent revisions.
Interesting comment? Hmm.. Best of luck to them - I know personally how tough it is to make a Star Fox game (having made 3 of them), and it's not as easy as it looks. ~Dylan Cuthbert, President of Q-Games
It should be noted, however, that Nintendo owns all copyrights and trademarks concerning Star Fox, not Q-Games.
