Scott Rates (born August 26, 1977) is an American journalist, actor and television personality. He is currently a reporter at KRON 4 news in San Francisco. He is a video journalist, meaning he shoots, writes and edits his own stories. Early life and education Rates was born in Santa Barbara, California. The son of Jim Rates, an electronic engineer and Pam Rates, a medical technologist. Rates was first exposed to a television news reporter when his house was hit by lightning and he was interviewed about it for a local broadcast. When he was 13, his family moved to Orlando, Florida where he spent the next 25 years. Rates attended Seminole State College of Florida and studied theater and film. Career Rates started as an actor for 10 years at Universal Orlando amusement park. He played various roles as an actor. He was also a manager, acting as attraction supervisor and entertainment coordinator. During his time as an actor, he also appeared as an extra in the X-Files movie. WKMG Local 6 Rates got his start in news as an overnight editor for WKMG-TV, the CBS affiliated station in Orlando. He worked his way through the ranks at the station to become a producer, then a photographer, eventually becoming an on-air personality. Rates gained local attention for the "Night Cam", which involved being on the scene at breaking news and reporting on it in a "walk-and-talk" style. Casey Anthony Trial Rates covered international breaking news stories like the Casey Anthony trial. He photographed Casey Anthony being arrested and interviewed Casey's parents, Cindy and George Anothony. Shooting of Trayvon Martin After the shooting of Trayvon Martin in 2012, Rates covered marches and protests. WFTV 9 In 2010, Rates moved to WFTV 9, the ABC affiliated station in Orlando. While there he acted as the helicopter journalist for the station, flying over breaking news scenes and narrating them for viewers. KRON 4 Currently, Rates works at the independent television station KRON 4 News. He is one of the only reporters in the country that runs his own live truck every night. He has been praised by local media outlets for his creative storytelling. He also sometimes covers sports and acts as a fill-in anchor. Crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 Rates covered the crash of Asiana Flight 214 while working as a reporter in San Francisco. Superbowl 50 In February 2016, Rates covered Superbowl 50 when it was hosted in San Francisco. He gave viewers a tour of the city the week leading up to the game. The BackStory Rates stars on the reality documentary series, The BackStory. The series portrays a behind-the-scenes look at the news gathering process. The BackStory cameras followed Rates as he went through a haunted house on live television, reported on breaking news, confronted local politicians and pitched stories to the newsroom. Personal Life Rates is a fan of the Oakland Raiders. He is an avid golfer. And he also enjoys cooking.
