The Science Undergraduate Society of McGill University is a student-run society representing more than 5000 students pursuing Bachelors of Science and Bachelors of Arts & Science degrees at McGill University (located in Montreal, Quebec). The society consists of nine executives, a representative to the university senate, three representatives to the larger , and over 200 committee members. Governance General Council The purpose of the General Council is to act as the governing body of the Science Undergraduate Society (hereafter referred to as the SUS), and to set priorities and policies for the Executive Committee to act upon. The General Council consists of one representative from each of the 18 science departmental council, one representative from the First Year Undergraduate Science Society (FUSS), the nine members of the executive committee, the three representatives to the , the science representative to the McGill senate, and a speaker of the council. All members of the council have one vote except for the speaker and the three appointed members of the executive committee, which have no vote. Meetings of the General Council take places once every two weeks during the academic year. Executive Committee A committee of the General Council that is tasked with governing the society between meetings. The committee consists of six elected representatives (President, VP Finance, VP Academic, VP Internal, VP Communications, VP External) and three positions appointed by the elected representatives (Executive Revenue Officer, Executive Administrator, Executor of Clubs and Services). Membership Membership of the includes all undergraduate students registered at the McGill University (Downtown Campus) in the Faculty of Science or Faculty of Arts and Science. It is the second largest faculty student associations at McGill University, after the Arts Undergraduate Society (AUS). Departmental Councils The Science Undergraduate Society is affiliated with 18 departmental councils, serving as their official governing body. The 18 departmental councils are: * McGill Anatomy and Cell Biology Student Society (MACSS) * Bachelor of Arts and Sciences Integrative Council (BASiC) * McGill Undergraduate Meteorological Student Association (MUMSA) * Biochemistry Undergraduate Society (BUGS) * McGill Biology Student Union (MBSU) * Chemistry Undergraduate Students' Society (CUSS) * Medical-Preparatory Dental-Preparatory Student Association (MDSA) * Computer Science Undergraduate Society * The Monteregian Society (Monty) - Earth & Planetary Sciences * McGill Environment Students' Society (MESS) * McGill Undergraduate Geography Students (MUGS) * Society of Undergraduate Mathematics Students (SUMS) * Microbiology and Immunology Students' Association (MISA) * Neuroscience Undergraduates of McGill (NUM) * Pharmacology Integrative League of Students (PILS) * McGill Society of Physics Students (MSPS) * Physiology Undergraduate League of Students (PULS) * McGill Psychology Students Association (MPSA) The McGill Integrative Bioscience Society (MIBS), while not officially affiliated with the SUS (since it is not yet officially recognized to have its own department), is working on achieving SUS service status in order to be better integrated with the science community. Events and Initiatives Orientation Week Orientation Week, colloquially known as Frosh, is a campus wide event that involves each individual faculty association planning activities for incoming first-year students in an effort to get them integrated into the school's community. The events that are planned are often in collaboration with other faculties and typically include activities such as a Montreal bar and restaurant crawl, concerts, boat parties, movie nights, etc. Additionally, every faculty picks a new theme for their frosh every year, usually involving a pun on the word "frosh". Past themes for the SUS frosh have included Froshing Nemo (2016), Cirque du Frosh (2015), and Froshin' a la Playa (2014). While in the past, frosh activities have been said to have negative impacts on the Milton-Parc community surrounding the McGill campus, significant efforts have been made in recent years for McGill frosh coordinators to improve the relationship with the community in order to hear and address their concerns. Social SUStainability Month The Social SUStainability Month initiative (occasionally reduced to a week in years past), is operated by the Social SUStainability Month Committee and works towards promoting social sustainability through fundraising and donations to a charity of the committee's choice. Notable donations made to the past include $12,000 donated in 2016 to L'Abri en Ville, an organization dedicated to providing sustainable housing for mentally ill adults, and $15,000 in 2013 to Head and Hands. Science Games Similar to other faculty-specific, large-scale events such as the McGill Management Undergraduate Society's Carnival, Science Games consists of a series of events over multiple days in the beginning of the winter semester. Usually taking place in mid-January, the games involve teams typically correlating with the different departments within the faculty, which compete against each other in a series of events in order to gain points and win the competition.
