Schock Metallwerk

Schock Metallwerk GmbH (abbreviated company name and logo lettering: Schock Metall) is a medium-sized, family owned and managed company based in Urbach, Germany, which is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The company was founded in 1924 in Schorndorf and has been legally independent under its current company name in Urbach since 1978.
Company history
The Schock company was founded in 1924 by brothers Wilhelm, Hermann and Karl Schock, in Schorndorf, Germany. Back then the brothers produced bead mouldings and cut strips with machines that they themselves had designed. About twelve years later, production was expanded to include metal-clad wood strips. Roll forming manufacturing, which was widely unknown at that time, was utilized for the first time in connection with this process. In the 1950s, the new production and administrative buildings in Schorndorf were completed. Schock & Co. GmbH was newly established in 1955, and a short time later it added plastic extrusion technology to its manufacturing range. In the 1960s, Schock started manufacturing decorative metals. Plastic, wood and metal were combined for the first time during the manufacturing of profiles. The plastic drawer was developed as an additional business segment. The drawer, in its classic three-sided frame structure, is still being used in many furniture applications today. Drawer manufacturing spurred the development of a range of slides and mirror cabinets featuring plastic profiles.
In 1966, the four partners, Friedrich Schock, Karl Schock, Hermann Schock and Richard Schock, assumed management of the company. The opening of the new metal plant in Urbach, Germany on October 1, 1971, was a milestone in the later establishment of today's Schock Metallwerk GmbH. Additional plants were opened that same year in Bönen and Treuchtlingen and the structural expansions in Schorndorf were completed. At that time, more than 1,200 people were employed by the Schock Group at the four sites.
On July 1, 1978, the plant in Urbach became legally independent with partners Hermann Schock and Richard Schock, and was newly established as Schock Metallwerk GmbH. Even back then, the company was already producing metal drawer slides, predominantly for the furniture industry, and decorative metals made from aluminum and steel sheets for the radio, television and phonographic industry. In subsequent years, the sites were systematically expanded by establishing and acquiring companies in Fuenlabrada/Madrid (Spain), Dillenburg and Chesapeake/Virginia (USA). Hermann Schock left the company in 1988, which meant that Richard Schock was the sole owner of both companies. Under his direction, the Schock Metall Group became one of the world's leading manufacturers of ball bearing slides and organization systems, and the production space was increased by a production hall with 2300 m². At this time, more than 500 people were employed by the Schock Metall Group at the various sites.
In 2002, under the leadership of Martin Schock, the global market activities were restructured by establishing five business competence centers: furniture, office, industrial, automotive and appliances. In 2011, the new business segment of special profiles was added.
Products
Roll forming technology is a core competency of Schock Metall. Roll forming is characterized by a multi-step shaping of a flat metal strip, which is continuously shaped into a wide variety of different cross-section geometries by roll stands for open or closed profiles that are situated one after the other. This enables additional processing steps to be integrated into the process. Schock Metall has been using this process to manufacture ball bearing slides and telescopic slides from cold-rolled steel or stainless steel for more than 40 years now. These slides are traditionally primarily utilized as drawer slides. The physical benefits of the ball bearing slides are based on their quiet and smooth operation and self-cleaning function. Schock Metall also utilizes the roll forming technology to develop and manufacture special profiles. The scope of services thus ranges from the simulation of the roll forming process to the manufacturing of entire assemblies.

The Urbach site of Schock Metall is certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and validated according to the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) Regulation.
