Dr. Saul Erdel is a fictional character, a scientist that appears in comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Joseph Samachson and artist Joe Certa. He featured Detective Comics #225 "The Manhunter From Mars" in November 1955. He is responsible for accidentally transporting the Martian Manhunter to our planet. Fictional character biography Dr. Erdel was a scientist obsessed with discovering life on other planets. His research into an experimental teleportation beam is directly responsible for bringing the Martian Manhunter to his lab, allowing him to survive the Martian holocaust. The shock of their encounter killed the elderly Dr. Erdel, leaving the martian with no means of returning home to his family. John Jones latter battles scientific criminal named Alex Dunster, who has a copy of Dr. Erdel’s teleportation machine and is using it to acquire gadgets from space. Frankenstein Frankenstein tracks down Melmoth and makes his way to Mars through the "Erdel Gate" the device used to bring the Martian Manhunter to Earth. On Mars, the Monster confronts Melmoth once again. Frankenstein frees the children Melmoth has enslaved to work in his gold mines, and feeds Melmoth to the flesh-eating, praying mantis-like horses of Mars. Final Crisis Later the Kobra cult stole Dr. Erdel's teleportation technology, and a piece of stone taken from the Statue of Hatred in the Rock of Eternity. With these, in addition to the magic of the Bestowed, Kobra was able to move invisibly from place to place, using magic to speed-indoctrinate whole cells of members, creating infrastructure out of nothing. Flashpoint In Flashpoint around 1985, the Outsider is revealed to have kept J'onn J'onzz captive in a secret research facility after stealing Dr. Erdel's teleportation device. . and Other versions * Dr. Saul Erdel featured as a villain in the elseworld comic Batman: Holy Terror. In this universe Superman was turned over to the state by "a God-fearing couple in Kansas" and became a test subject in a government facility in Gothan Towne. Dr. Erdel considered him to be the "most powerful specimen" that he had ever studied and gave him the designation "Green Man." The Green Man displayed an astonishing array of abilities and became more and more powerful as he became older. He also became more rebellious and difficult to control. Consequently, Erdel was forced to kill with a piece of radioactive debris which was found with his spacecraft. Erdel left his corpse on display in the testing facility. When he saw the body, Batman felt an unfathomable sense of loss and sorrow as if all hope for the future had been destroyed. Enraged, Batman tried to escape and Dr. Erdel opened fire. However, one of the bullets bounced off the Green Man's corpse and struck Dr. Erdel opened, killing him. * Dr. Saul Erdel appeared in the comic. He operated from Gotham City's observatory, outside of the city limit. In an experiment in sending radio signals into deep space, his experiment somehow accidentally teleported Martian J'onn J'onzz into his observatory. Dr. Erdel was surprised of J'onn's appearance and suffered a fatal heart attack. Before succumbing to his death, Dr. Erdel sombrely apologized J'onn for stranding him on Earth and warns that human society will not take too kindly to him as people will fear him because of his appearance, and strongly recommended to not reveal himself and take the time to study humanity. * Dr. Saul Erdel appeared in the comic based on the DC Animated Universe. Revealing the origin of J'onn J'onzz. Other Media Television * The "Erdel Initiative", appears in the Young Justice TV series. This is a S.T.A.R. Labs division responsible for maintaining the Justice League's Zeta-Beam technology. Film * Dr. Saul Erdel is featured in the direct-to-DVD animated film, Justice League: The New Frontier. which is based on the comic. * Dr. Saul Erdel appears as a flashback in Martian Manhunter's mind in the direct-to-DVD animated film, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Other * Dr. Saul Erdel voiced by Tom Tully features in the Justice League: Alien Invasion 3D (also known as Justice League 3D - The Ride) is an Interactive Dark Ride created by the Sally Corporation that is located at Warner Bros.
