Roger Spy (March 22, 1989), Roger Spy is a London based director, graphic designer, editor, visual artist, actor and Dj.
Biography
Roger Spy is a self-taught multi media maverick who has proved himself as a versatile DJ spinning his brand of exotica in fashion, film and music industry events. Since arriving in London January 2008 he has been involved in fashion, art, music and film.
Career
Fashion
Since 2010 Roger Spy has been directing and producing videos for a variety of clients and magazines. Most notably with models such as Burberry face, Cara Delevingne. Spy also directed Nina Porter in a Dolce & Gabbana editorial for the Spring/Summer 2011 issue of Wonderland Magazine. He directed a video and produced visuals with Luke Worrall for the launch of Sheer Magazine and the Billy Boyce AW10 video Lookbook, for which Logan5 composed the score. Roger edited The Greatest Story Ever Told for Piers Atkinson, directed by Ben Charles Edwards. Spy has also worked closely with Grant Thomas, whom he has collaborated with for various editorials.
Film and Music
Roger has been involved in a variety of film projects from promo videos with Ute Lemper to art presentations and short films. In July 2009 Roger Spy presented a 22 minute piece at the DNA exhibition with Arthertz at the Horse Hospital. DNA was a group show inspired and with John Foxx. Spy's work was presented along side Gary Numan, Nick Rhodes, Andrew Back, Jonathan Barnbrook, Ben Charles Edwards, Ian Emes and Alex Proyas. Inspired by Sci-Fi B movies, Roger used The Mysterians, Project Moonbase, Conquest of Space, When Worlds Collide and the silent Metropolis to marry five of his favorite Foxx tracks, X - Ray Vision, Sailing On Sunshine, Friendly Fire, Crash and Burn, a sample from Shifting City and From Trash.The video was presented once again at the closing party of the exhibition where Roger also DJed.
In July 2010 Roger directed, edited and starred in Electricity and Ghosts, a short-film that was shown at the Apple Store in Regent Street as a backdrop for Spacedog's performance as part of the Rushes Soho Shorts Film Festival - an internationally recognized platform for the short film genre. The film also starred Dennis Da Silva and Sarah Angliss. Since then the film has also been screened at Doyle Devere's Gallery and Kinetica 2011.
Spy made a cameo appearance in Ben Charles Edwards new feature film, Animal Charm.
Graphic Design and Art
Having had already extensive experience in designing graphics for music and fashion events, Roger presented two digital pieces at his second exhibition Mirrorball, April 2010, in Covent Garden at the Kirk Originals flagship store. In November of the same year Roger presented another two new prints of the same project, Architect, at Doyle Devere's gallery in Notting Hill.
Visuals and Promos
Soon after arriving in London Roger met club legend Rosemary Turner who offered his first gig as a visual artist, producing the visuals for Egg's Fashion Week party, Wearable Art For Durable People. Since then Spy created visuals and promotional trailers for Heaven, Embassy, Beach Blanket Babylon, Raffles and Steve Strange's THE FACE.
In February 2008 Roger worked closely with Ute Lemper, filming the rehearsals for her London dates of Angels Over Berlin Tour. He also produced promotion videos for her website and myspace.
DJ
Patrick Lilley gave Spy his first DJ gig in London at Work!, Heaven. Four days later entrepreneur and businessman Robert Newmark invited Roger to be the resident DJ at his luxurious brand venue in Notting Hill, Beach Blanket Babylon.
He has entertained a variety of crowds including the likes of Prince Harry, Nancy Dell'Olio, Lorna Luft, Dev Patel, Freida Pinto and The Pussycat Dolls. It was also at Beach Blanket Babylon that Roger played at Woody Allen's wrap party for his 2010 film You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger.
Roger has DJ alongside Boy George, Mark Moore, Larry Tee, Reuben Wu, Dennis Da Silva, Erol Sabadosh, Jodie Harsh, Kris Di Angelis.
Also plays regularly at Dollar, Beach Blanket Babylon in Shoreditch and has had a residency Raffles.
Style
Roger is known for his immediate recognizable look, exotic style and masculinity. Although androgynous, Spy is inspired by bold artists such as Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Siouxsie Sioux and Golden Age of Hollywood greats such as Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant. Blending them together into a futuristic "alien" with an endless variety of hair colours.
