He is a former prize winner of a Shell LiveWIRE Award, Daily Express/Midland Bank Young Businessman of the Year Award, Runner-up of the Granada TV Flying Start Award, presented by Tony Wilson, and also a recipient of a Winston Churchill research grant in 1991. He is an entrepreneur who creates business development strategies based on niche marketing. Ro-Bin (UK) Ltd Founded in 1987 Ro-Bin (UK) Ltd was a private waste disposal company that operated throughout Lancashire. The company had operations in Lancaster, Blackpool, Preston, Leyland, Southport, Blackburn, the Ribble Valley, Burnley, Bolton, Chorley, Wigan and Manchester. During the early 1990s the company received planning approval for a waste recycling centre on the outskirts of Preston. The waste recycling center permitted the extraction of recyclable waste prior to landfill disposal. The company prepared a report in 1991 as part of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship that brought into question the UK's preparedness for the future increase of waste output. The report also examined domestic waste incineration in Tokyo and whether incineration of domestic waste in the UK could ever be acceptable. Ro-Bin (UK) Ltd was one of the North West's fastest growing companies during the early 1990s. Customers included McDonalds, P&O Property management, Pizzahut, Royal Mail, Laura Ashley, BBC Radio Lancashire, TopShop and Preston College. The business was later sold to Cleanaway, a UK based waste disposal contractor. The Business Mentor Robin became actively involved with the Federation of Small Businesses in the UK and the Princes Youth Business Trust "PYBT", The Princes Trust. He was one of the youngest business advisers in the UK and could relate to young people starting a business due to his own experience in his early 20's. One of the success stories helped by the "PYBT" was Sugared Almonds, a bridal couture business in East Lancashire owned by Lisa Haworth. The United Nations in Denmark The work undertaken at the UNDP offices in Copenhagen involved the Inter Agency Procurement of goods and services within the UN family. The role given to Robin was to introduce environmentally sensitive procurement practices into the agency's procurement system and thereafter any successes shared with other UN agencies. He worked as a Research and Development Co-ordinator and became editor of the local UN Green Newsletter. He established monthly meetings where all the local UN agencies could meet and share ideas for greater "Greening of the procurement process". These included the World Health Organisation, The European Environment Agency, UNICEF, UNOPS and the Danish Ministry for the Environment. Virusman/ClinTel Just before the new Millennium, Robin prepared a business plan to help find funding and establish a new company that would support people, especially children, with their medication. The concept included the creation of a cartoon character called Virusman who would live on the internet and have the ability to telephone people, providing support, education and motivation whilst they were taking their medicine. The cartoon character Virusman was also called Dr. David Barton. It was originally intended he should be slightly similar to Spiderman and the X-Men but with a special focus on super-hero abilities to fight disease and deadly viruses. His mission was to ensure everyone was healthy and protect them from any danger. (Source Danish newspaper - 28 December 2001) The name Virusman was changed to ClinTel due to problems of communicating the precise nature of the business focus. ClinTel used Proactive-Interactive voice response telephony technology created by software engineers and started to work with a greater emphasis on patient compliance of medicine and post market surveillance of medicines already on the market. "Non-compliance of medicine" refers to the ability of a patient to take their medicines correctly. ClinTel created workshops in Cambridge, Berlin and Copenhagen training persons from the healthcare sector about the root causes of poor compliance of medicine and solutions to enhance patient education. ClinTel worked with Osteoporosis, Diabetes type 2, COPD and Depression in the subject area of compliance of medicine. The main focus for ClinTel later became osteoporosis and e-health patient education programmes at Hvidovre Hospital, Copenhagen in co-operation with the Danish Health Ministry. The goal of the project was to investigate any cost savings that could be made by ensuring high .
