Dr. Roberto Aiello (born 1960) is a high technology entrepreneur who specializes in wireless communications. He is one of the significant figure in the field of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. He founded two UWB companies, wrote several books, published dozens of articles and authored eighteen patents. Early Life Aiello grew up in Trieste, Italy, and earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Trieste and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. Aiello started his career as a Physicist at at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and at the Superconducting Super Collider Laboratory, where he designed instruments to control the property of the particle beam. Work in UWB Aiello started working in UWB at Interval Research in 1996, Paul Allen's technology incubator, to manage wireless research. In an effort to develop a short range, high performance Wireless Network, he experienced with a variety of wireless technologies such as 2.4GHz, 900MHz and magnetic coupling, eventually settling on UWB. Since there was no UWB spectrum available at the time, he effectively lobbied the FCC, US Congress and US Senate to achieve UWB spectrum. The FCC issued the Report and Order on Feb 14th 2002, allowing the biggest portion of spectrum ever allowed for unlicensed use. He then turned his attention to world wide spectrum regulations and contributed to getting UWB spectrum approved in Europe, Japan, Korea, China and Canada. Aiello founded two Venture Capital backed semiconductor companies: Fantasma Networks and Staccato Communications , to commercialize products based on UWB. Staccato Communications is now the leading company in Wireless USB. In both cases he was the first CEO, moving to CTO as the company grew. As part of the UWB industry development, he was a founding member of the IEEE 802.15.3a, IEEE 802.15.4a, and WiMedia Alliance where he served as BOD member and VP of Technology. He was also a key contributor to the Wireless USB standard.
