Rilezu

Traditional animation uses sequences of individual cel paintings on acetate, which are rapidly shown in succession to animate the sequence. In the past cels were each hand painted, a tedious process that involved sketching, transferring the sketch to acetate, then painting each cel individually.
Recent advances in digital coloring have made this technique largely obsolete by allowing animators to scan the sketches and coloring them digitally. Although this process is much less expensive than hand-painting each cel, it disappointed anime cel collectors, who collect cels from various shows, because this digital process does not have any tangible painted acetate cels.
Rilezu cels are hand painted cels based on the original sketches, but were not used in the actual production of the anime. These cels are created for the sole purpose of providing collectors with a tangible cel for their collection. Rilezu cels often come with the original sketches used for the animation.
