Rick Charls is a former professional high diver from Cincinnati, Ohio who in 1983 tied the record for the World’s Highest Dive by plunging 172 feet on ABC’s Wide World of Sports at Sea World in San Diego. A former Mid American Conference Diving Champion at Ohio University, Charls began his high diving career in 1979 performing exhibitions at Six Flags over Georgia and Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. In 1980 he was a bronze medalist in the World Target High Diving Championships. The following year, 1981, he won the World Tandem High Diving Championships followed by a third place finish at the 1982 World High Diving Championships. Over the past quarter century a number of divers have attempted unsuccessfully to break the record of 172 ft. only to be disqualified due to injuries sustained upon impact with the water. Charls is currently a Health & Physical Education teacher at Granada Hills Charter High School outside of Los Angeles. Catagory:High Diving
