Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Kauzlarich was the U.S. Army commander of the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. In February 2007, Kauzlarich was charged with taking his battalion (2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry) into the 9 Nisan district of Baghdad with the task of clearing volatile neighborhoods of militia fighters. His battalion successfully redeployed to Fort Riley, Kansas in April 2008. Kauzlarich is a 1984 graduate of Grants Pass High School, Grants Pass, Oregon and of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1988. In recent years, Kauzlarich has come under attack for his alleged handling of a soldiers death Pat Tillman. Kauzlarich, like so many others, eventually learned that the Tillman's felt their anger due to not being told readily that their son was possibly killed by friendly fire. Kauzlarich's comments led Rep. Henry Waxman, at that time chair of the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, to request the Pentagon to discipline Kauzlarich for conduct unbecoming of an officer.. This request was denied.
