Rafal Hanusowski

Rafal Hanusowski is a Polish Born, Miami-based Photographer, Filmmaker and Digital Artist known for his surrealistic work under the FLUXUS alias. Rafal's surrealistic work is achieved by using self captured photographs of architecture and landscapes that are then digitally manipulated to illustrate the fragility of the perception of the naked eye, and highlight the power and beauty of achieving a different perspective. The work explores what is beneath the surface; the deconstruction of what we perceive to be reality. The many layers and colors used throughout his work exemplifies the chaotic and unpredictable aura that preludes the journey into self-exploration, discovery, and acceptance.
In 2016, Rafal exhibited work at Young Artist Initiative, Artexpo New York, Art San Diego and most recently Spectrum Miami during Art Basel.
Biography
Early Life/Adolescence: 1990-2009
Rafal was born in Wroclaw, Poland to parents Krzysztof and Beata Hanusowski on September 21, 1990. He is the younger sibling of Architect Pawel Hanusowski. On July 3, 1998, the Hanusowski family moved to North Miami, Florida where he would attend W.J. Bryan Elementary School and learn the English language. Rafal spent his adolescence at North Miami Middle and North Miami Senior High, during which time he discovered photoshop and begin to develop a passion for digital art. After graduating high school in 2009, Rafal attended Florida International University in Miami, Florida where he took Photography, Drawing and Creative Writing courses before finally dropping out in 2011.
Early 20s: 2010-2015
After acquiring a Canon camera, Rafal begin shooting music videos and documentary styled video blogs with local musicians under the alias IAMKINGXXI. During this time, he crossed paths with former Def Jam and We The Best Music Group artist Ace Hood and begin traveling with him in May 2011 as a documentarian releasing weekly video content, where he would continue to do so until May 2012 when both parties decided to mutually part ways.
In late 2012, Rafal became interested in narrative story telling after watching by Stanley Kubrick for the first time. During this period he embarked on a new project, having successfully finished and released his debut short film, Shah Mat in 2013 in which he acted as writer, director, cinematographer and editor of the project. Shah Mat later screened at I’m not gonna move to LA at O’Cinema in Wynwood, Florida on August 7th 2013 and TIMECODE: NOLA FF2 Film Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana on Rafal's birthday September 21st in 2013. After taking some time off to study Film Production at Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida where he graduated with an Associates Degree in Film, Rafal went on to working on his follow up short film entitled Void Complex . Void Complex screened at I’m not gonna move to LA at O’Cinema in Wynwood, Florida on June 3 2015 where it won best editing. On November 22 2015, Void Complex again screened at West of Cannes Film Festival in Miami, Florida.
Late 20s: 2016-Present

Around the end of 2015 leading to 2016, Rafal begin to explore Surrealism through his digital art under the alias FLUXUS. Rafal describes his technique as "Not deliberate, not random but something in-between" in a feature in an online publication, The Artist Catalogue. . After releasing work digitally between 2015-2016 and exhibiting work at Young Artist Initiative, Artexpo New York, Art San Diego and most recently Spectrum Miami during Art Basel, Rafal released a book entitled DARKSIDE, containing 58 pages of art work on December 13 2016.
In late 2016, Rafal begin work on a new short film entitled 'myride', which is currently in production. The movie is written and directed by Arley Sepulveda and Rafal is credited as co-writer and director of photography.
'Garden of the Gods', a series under the FLUXUS alias is currently exhibiting at the Art Collective Gallery in Wynwood, Florida. Rafal has actively been releasing new art through his website and Instagram since the beginning of 2017.
Influences
Rafal has always credited Stanley Kubrick as being his all time favorite director, inspiring his perspective within photography and cinematography tremendously. Kubrick was quoted frequently in Rafal's short film Shah Mat. Carl Jung has also been a heavy influence on Rafal's ideology and understanding of life, often taking concepts pioneered by Jung and incorporating it into his work. Upon visiting the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, Dali has been a huge influence on Rafal's exploration into surrealism through his work. In his feature with The Artist Catalogue, Rafal states "Being in the presence of work of Salvador Dali inspired ideas in me that I have yet been able to fully grasp. He was a genius with his own agenda and was not bound by conscious realities. The surrealism that he explored in his art was undeniably out of this world and full of mystique that has influenced me and my art to new heights".
