RacingThePlanet: Namibia 2009 was a 6-stage ultramarathon in the south of Namibia, through the Fish River Canyon, Namib Desert, and Skeleton Coast.
There were 213 starters from 38 countries in the 250 km race. The competitors each carried their own bedding and food for the seven days. The largest contingent of runners was the 63 from Hong Kong; the next largest 58 from the UK. 167 completed all six stages on Sunday 24 May in Luderitz: Spain’s Salvador Calvo Redondo won, narrowly beating South Africa’s Ryan Sandes. Of the 54 female competitors, the United Kingdom’s Lucy Hilton finished fourth overall and was the first lady to cross the finishing line. A blind competitor from South Korea ran the whole race.
