R Venugopal is an Indian engineer who is Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives in Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), Government of India. Background Venugopal was born on 15 May 1964 in Pandalam. His father K.Raghavan Pillai was a businessman and mother is P. SumathiAmma. Venugopal is married to S.Sajitha, Professor of Paediatrics at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and has one daughter. Notable work During the COVID-19 pandemic, under the supervision of Venugopal a joint initiative taken by BPCL and Prodair Air Products to deliver 99.7% pure oxygen from the Kochi refinery to government hospitals. In 2012, Venugopal was part of the Sivakasi factory explosion investigation team. He was even part of the team that investigated the Puttingal temple fire case in 2016. In 2013, Venugopal organized a ‘Safety Awareness Week’ campaign in Sivakasi to create awareness amongst safety workers of the fireworks unit. For sixteen years, Pooram fireworks final approval was given by Venugopal. Based on his recommendations and guidelines, PESO found that the Thrissur Pooram Committee had complied with all the firework and safety norms. Venugopal led PESO, Kerala team for the controlled blasting of urban structures at Kochi as part of implementation of Hon’ble Supreme court's order and assisting the state government in demolition of Golden Kayaloram, Jain Coral Cove, H2O Holy Faith and Alfa Serene for violating environment rules. The team demolished the buildings by implosion using the lesser quantities of explosives and the operations were a part of environment protection.
