QUANTUM GENRE VS. QUANTUM FICTION Unlike quantum fiction that exploits mainstream technique and forms sci-fi, works written in Quantum Genre (QG) are distinguished by a specific style. The term was initially introduced by V. Ulea in her Quantum Manifesto published by Sein und Werden in 2008. A year later she applied her theory of QG to the analysis of Grace Andreacchi’s novel, Scarabocchio. Her own collection of short stories, Snail, illustrated the main features inherent in QG. In the After Word she discusses some of them, outlining the quantum nature of her storylette. In 2010 Paraphilia Magazine published quantum e-thology, Quantum Genre in the Planet of Arts, edited by V. Ulea. In the introduction to the anthology V.Ulea stated the following: “The Quantum Genre is an emerging type of fiction that Darin Bradley calls "little weird". Using his term, I would call QG ‘weird-weird.’ QG is not about the quantum topic but a ‘quantum’ way of representation of characters and the universe. The theme can be any, including the quantum one, but the technique should be unlike the one we observe in mainstream literature. Therefore, a traditional formulaic language of synopsis required by literary agents and commercial publishers doesn’t work for QG. The Quantum Work can’t be sold to them and it has no appeal to the mainstream reader just in the same way as Impressionism or Cubism had no appeal to the general viewer.” As the publisher of the anthology mentions, “the e-thololgy offers a “weird-weird” fiction whose “quantum” quality lies in a way of representation of characters and their “obscure” world. It has nothing to do with sci-fi or the mainstream plot-oriented fiction. Both literary works and artistic images included in the anthology reveal a universe of diversified possibilities and characters whose quantum multiplicity and uncertainty would make one. The anthology presents short stories by Tantra Bensko, Tom Bradley, Rachel Kendall, Dorothee Lang, Kyle Muntz, j.a.tyler, D. Harlan Wilson, and others. An article by an acclaimed film critic, Betty Jo Tucker, a founding member of the San Diego Film Critics’ Society, opens the door to the QG in cinema. It is followed by a script by Misha Chariton. Last but not least, we are proud to present an excerpt of a truly fascinating novel, SCARABOCCHIO, quantum in essence, written by Grace Andreacchi.” V. Ulea specified that “to qualify for QG all or some of the following principles must be applied to a work: # "quantum" duality of characters # the uncertainty effect # quantum entanglement # "quantum" time # the observer/interpreter effect A list of works written in Quantum Genre * AFTERWARDS.
