Punk Is a Rotting Corpse

Punk Is a Rotting Corpse is the name of a cassette recording attributed as the first demo cassette recording released by Napalm Death in 1982.

However, the cassette is not the first demo recording by Napalm Death. The tape is actually a 'composite' recording created by an unknown person in the late 1990's. It contains a bootlegged recording of the Napalm Death contribution to the 'Bullshit Detector - Volume 3' album (Crass Records - 1984) and bootlegged demo cassette recordings by a group called Civil Defense. Neither of the groups are in any way related.

An indication of the misleading provenance of the supposed demo recording can be found in the song 'The Crucifixion of Possessions' which is presented in the truncated format in which it was presented on the Crass records compilation album. The original recording of the song contained an instrumental introduction which was removed for the version of the song which appeared on the Crass records album due to time constraints in late 1983.

The real first demo recording by Napalm Death was the 'Halloween' demo cassette in 1982. This recording did contain the song 'Punk is a Rotting Corpse' (which is the first song ever written by the group).
