Many people only knows the positive affect of the internet, such as fast, easy accesses to resources and fast, easy, real-time communication. But most people do not know the side effect of the internet, such as unauthorized access to personal information.
According to an article posted on Marketing Charts 61% of American believes that all their activites online are private, and that it will not be released to the public without their permission.
Protection from the web
Here are some tips to protect you from the web:
* When a web site ask you to submit personal information, always read and understand the web site privacy policies first.

* If a web site offer you a cookie, refuse to accept it if possible.<ref name=site1 />
* Hide your IP address when surfing the web. In other words surf anonymously. There are software available that allows you to hide your IP address while surfing the web. <ref name=site1 />
* When giving contact information to an unknown parties choose a disposable email address.<ref name=site1 />
* Always use a secure, encrypted web connection when conducting a banking transaction or other type of sensitive transactions.<ref name=site1 />
* Don't use your real name when posting messages.<ref name=site1 />
* Discussion/news group usually store all the messages that you have posted. This allow unknown parties to read your messages. But most of these group provide you will the action of deleting your messages. If you do not want people reading your messages, delete them.<ref name=site1 />
* Read messages off line.<ref name=site1 />
* Install and use security enhancing software <ref name=site1 />
* Change your password often.<ref name=site1 />

According to an article posted on Marketing Charts, many Americans are taking action on preventing their personal information from being shared on the web. Many web users has used tips that are suggested above under Protection from the web<ref name=site2 />
According to the article, 35% uses disposable email address, 26% uses third party software to hide their identity (IP address) and 25% uses fake names (fake information) <ref name=site2 />.
