The Pretend Wallet Reach, also known as "Faux wallet reach" is a terminology often associated within human to human interaction. The act of the “pretend wallet reach” is defined as an action whereby one person reaches for his or her wallet/purse to settle a bill, pay for an activity, etc. However, the “pretend” aspect of this maneuver is that the person reaching for their wallet does not have a true intention of paying for their share nor to pay for others. In essence, it is a façade, with the hidden expectation that the other person will simply pay for everything.
In the contemporary world, these instances often occur during male and female interaction. For example, after a dinner date, the female would attempt the pretend wallet reach when the bill arrives, but with the hopes that her male counterpart would suggest paying for all. Yet, it is important to note that the female in this particular scenario would actually pay if the male did not suggest otherwise. Hence, it is sometimes misleading as well.
