Ski-Whoop

Ski-Whoop (skee-woop') - is a Philadelphia slang word begun in the Manayunk are (Philadelphia, PA) in mid to late 2007 which loosely means: to veer sharply at the last second around an approaching object.

The term derived from the act in which an individual (usually intoxicated), may be walking along a crowded city street/sidewalk as bars are letting out and would approach an oncoming individual, step sharply in their direction (whether impeding their path or not), and then slide back out and subsequently around them while exclaiming, "Ski-WHOOP!" Sometimes this act is incidental but necessary to avoid a person-to-person collision. However, most times it is plain sophomoric humor.

The word has since took on numerous usages, ranging from juking out and veering around an opposing player in football or soccer, to passing someone quickly on the stairs. Various situations or instances can also be applied whether for practical or comical effect.

It is important to note that while it is not necessarily required, it is preferable to say, "Ski-Whoop!" while performing the action in order to be considered a true "Ski-Whoop," according to purists.

"Ski-Whoop" can be used as both a noun and a verb.
