Preparing for the ICSE is one of the most important and little understood facets of a teenager's life. Quite often, students looking for personalised help do not find it easily, unless they study in schools which follow advanced teaching methodologies. The burden of studies, examinations, projects and growing up all add up to the pressure on a teenager . The present schedule of the ICSE often leaves little time and even lesser mindspace for the teenager. Though the ICSE had been initially planned as a highly interactive means of education, over the years the pedagogy has changed and the focus on exams is now as great as in the other boards. An important aspect of the ICSE like in case of other board examinations, is that the student needs to pass in atleast 5 out of 7 subjects in order to pass and be eligible for further studies. Besides one also has to obtain a pass grade in the SU&PW course. The objective for most students is not only to pass, but also be 'do well' in the various subjects. The ICSE results determine the future of a student. It is the first stepping stone in one's career. ICSE tries to examine a candidate's basic conceptual understanding in various aspects. A student has to be thorough with the basic principles as well as its applications. One interesting feature of ICSE is that one can not predict the questions or the important topics. The theory of selective study does not work here. To do well in ICSE, one has to be guided properly. While certain amount of 'learning by rote' is required, especially for the various theorems, theories, formulae etc, it is more important to learn how to apply the 'theory' in practical situations. While theoretically, guidance is supposed to be provided by schools and prescribed textbooks, the immense sense of competition forces ambitious students to look beyond in order to do well. However, unlike the help which is widely available for professional entrance examinations, organised help is hardly available for board examinations. Traditionally, tutors have helped students with personalised help and solutions to sample papers and past years question papers. Some websites have now come up which provide similar help to students. Examples are ICSE Guess , Meritnation and Target ICSE . With the Internet usage and Braodband penetration in India growing tremendously, it is expected that more such sites would come up as well. The medium's many benefits such as geographic flexibility, innovative learning mechanisms such as audio video tutorials, possibility of a student-led learning module hold tremendous promise for service providers and students.
