|
Polish Jazz Recordings and Beyond (ISBN 9788380117440) is a reference work containing an encyclopedic directory of Polish jazz recordings on CD which are currently available in Poland, Europe or the United States. The first edition was written by Maciej Lewenstein, a Polish theoretical physicist. In addition to theoretical physics Lewenstein’s other passion is jazz and music, in general. His collection of discs includes over 9,000 items. The book has a format and structure very similar to The Penguin Guide to Jazz by Richard Cook and Brian Morton. Content The first edition was published in Poland by Warszawska Firma Wydawnicza in Warsaw. This book is a guide to Polish jazz recordings on CDs. It describes on 560 pages around 1,700 discs in a systematic and organized way, with artists names ordered alphabetically. The book includes over 60 references and an index of more than 5000 names. It often goes beyond jazz and describes discs with elements of contemporary classical music, folk, ethno and rock. Quoting Adam Baruch: "There is no other book already published on the subject, certainly nothing of such scope or including such detailed information. Although several books about Polish Jazz have been published in the last decade, none of them concentrate on Jazz recordings and they are mostly concerned with biographical and historical aspects of Polish Jazz. Therefore Mr. Lewenstein's book is in fact an ideal companion to those books already published."
