PNGARNET PNGARNET stands for Papua New Guinea Academic and Research Network. PNGARNET is a not-for-profit company formed by the Vice Chancellors of the six Universities of PNG in order to provide high quality, cost effective broadband services to the tertiary academic community of PNG. PNGARNET is developing a satellite based solution to the problems of geography and technological services that afflict PNG and limit internet access at many levels of PNG society. PNGARNET intends to commence operations in February 2008 as its equipment is ordered and installed. PNGARNET intends to be providing services to PNG Universities by March 2008.
The Universities of PNG have come together voluntarily to develop an internet solution. At the moment, the PNGARNET scheme involves a satellite, a hub based in Hong Kong and an extensive program of training and skill acquisition in each University. PNGARNET provides the overall architecture and the Universities own the equipment installed on their sites, ie satellite dishes and BUCs. PNGARNET owns the hub equipment and contracts external expertise as required.
