The album was released on October 18, 2011 as part of the Playlist music album series issued by Legacy Recordings, simultaneously with similarly unsanctioned best-of collections of the bands and solo artists.
The album has sold more 10,000 copies stateside.
Critical reception
Playlist: The Very Best of Kelly Rowland received a favorable review from Allmusic: Kelly Rowland released only two albums on Columbia - Simply Deep (2002) and Ms. Kelly (2007) - yet here is an anthology with a misleading title. Playlist: The Very Best of Kelly Rowland rounds up the highlights from her two Columbia albums and collects a number of club mixes, a soundtrack cut, and “When Love Takes Over,” her hit 2009 collaboration with David Guetta. Ironically, this is more likely to appeal to devout Rowland fans - specifically those who do not buy digital downloads - than casual listeners, as five of the 14 tracks were issued as non-album digital singles.
