Plas morfa

Overview
Plas Mora is an area roughly 1km south of the Welsh coastal village of Llanon, which is located in the Cardigan Bay area of West Wales. The area is reached by a single track road leading from the A487 road at the south end of Llanon village.

The area is best known for the large hotel 'Plas Morfa' that resides at the end of the road, adjacent to the beach.

Beach
The beach at Plas Morfa is notable for the ancient fishing pools, reputedly built by the monks of Strata Florida Abbey. These pools are created using large stones from the beach to create a u-shaped wall from the high tide line which is totally submerged at high tide. As the tide recedes, fish are trapped in the pools but do not die, as they are retained in the shallow water by the walls.

Plas Morfa hotel
The hotel was famously featured on BBC Wales News on December 18th 1988 after several residents reported sightings of a ghostly figure in the main dining / reception area. The figure was noted to be 'between 5' and 6' tall and appeared to be 'headless' as one resident was quoted. The figure was said to have been dressed in a white hessian or cotton outfit, and did not move or make any sounds. The residents said there had been a severe chill in the well heated lounge area for a couple of hours before the figure was seen, and the whole area surrounding the hotel was said to be 'noticably quieter' that evening that most times, as if the tide was so far out it could not be heard.

This report followed previous reports from 1978 from previous residents of strange occurences in the hotel, strangely on exactly the same date as the 1988 reports.

To date, no further reports have been made of the apparition.

The area of Plas Morfa has been mentioned in local folklore as the resting place of 'headless Dafydd' a local fisherman who was decapitated in a nasty fishing incident, involving a 30lb fishing line and a strong surge of tidal waters.

Future plans
At the time of writing, there are plans submitted for a large housing development at the junction of the A487 and the single track coast road. This development will mean that the Plas Morfa area of Llanon will become an almost separate entity from Llanon itself, with a large amount of new building planned for 2009 / 2010.
