Phil Browning

Phil Browning (b. 1931 d. 1999) is a Fluvanna County native growning up in Kidd's Store and graduated from Fluvanna High School in 1949. He was a member of the Fluvanna team that acquired the nickname 'Flying Flucos'. He attended Fork Union Military as a Post-Graduate and played on the football team. After FUMA he attended Georgetown (KY) College and played offensive guard for the Tigers. After college, Phil played football in the US Army in Germany.
After moving to Newport News, VA in 1960 Phil began learning the coaching profession in the youth football ranks. He also assisted the football team at Glouster High School. Phil started the first youth football team in Glouster, VA in 1966. The team was called the Rich's Supermen, with Rich's supermarket being the team sponsor. This 1966 team was the first sports team in Glouster County history to intergrate black and white players. This intergration was done a year before the public schools integrated. In 1967 Coach Browning was named the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Fluvanna County High School. The 1970 team qualified for the VHSL playoffs. This was the first year the VHSL had playoffs. The Flying Flucos scored a major upset of Number 1 Ranked Strasburg in the first round and played in the first Group 'A.' championship game losing in a last second extra point kick to Chilhowie. The Flucos won many district titles and made many playoff appearance thoughout the 70's and early 80's. The Flying Flucos returned to the Group 'A' championship game again in 1981 and lost on a last second score after a fumbled punt to JJ Kelly High School.
Phil Browning started the first indoor track team at Fluvanna in 1972 and won an indoor state championship in 1974. His outdoor track team won its first regional championship in 1975 and continued through the early 80's racking up many state track championships.
