Early College Decisions
Draymond Green has been nothing short of a stud so far in his career at Michigan State, but Spartan fans have to thank the University of Kentucky or else they would have never gotten the pleasure of having Green in the Green and White. Draymond Green’s originally made a verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of Kentucky and legendary coach Tubby Smith. That was until after the 2007-2008 college basketball season came to an end and Coach Smith decided to leave the University of Kentucky. Tubby Smith decided to leave Kentucky to go coach at the University of Minnesota, and therefore Green decided to side step Kentucky and instead decided to enroll at Michigan State University and play for Coach Tom Izzo.
College Basketball Career
During the 2008-2009 season, Green’s freshman year at Michigan State, the Spartans made their way to a 26-5 regular season record. Michigan State was a number 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and found their way into the finals to play North Carolina and ended up losing. Green did not have the stats to “wow” you during his freshman year, but during the end of the season Green began to develop a very unique style of play in being able to know what is going on around him. Green is said to have a great basketball IQ and has the ability to make that extra pass to find an open teammate. Green played near 11 and a half minutes per game during his freshman year and averaged just over 3 points and 3 rebounds per game.
When Green became a sophomore his college playing career started to take off. The Spartans had themselves another great regular season with a win/loss record of 24-7 and made it to a second straight final four. Draymond Green was a huge part of that. Green went from playing 11 and a half minutes per game his freshman year to almost 26 minutes per game his sophomore year, his points per game tripled from his freshman to sophomore year and his assists climbed from 0.8 per game to 3 assists per game. Green not only developed a great basketball IQ and passing game, but he also developed a much better mid range jumper which resulted in Green being more of a threat for the Spartans offensively. Draymond Green has proven over his first to years playing college basketball that he has a solid work ethic and a lot of talent, and to add to that he is being coached by one of the best colleges coaches of the modern day in Tom Izzo.
