Peyami Gurel (b. 1959, Istanbul), artist. He was born in 11.04.1959,Istanbul. He graduated from renown college, Istanbul Erkek High School. He started his undergaduate formation in Istanbul University department of Economics in 1977. Due to political crisis in term of 12 September 1980 he had to leave his academic carrier and he focused on his researchs about art and philosophy themes. He married in 1984, and started to work in his family business. But he could not keep it so long. He managed a touristic shop with his brother-in low between 1986-1988. He never leave his researchs and tentative works. Finally in 1988 with the support of his wife, he stoped all this process and decided to found his own gallery and studio. All workings arrived comprehensive form in 1993, and his gallery was transformed into a center of workshop programmes, exhibitions and project organizations. As well as painting, gallery opened its door to traditional art and artists for the first at that time. He also arranged a TV programme during 1996-1997 for ingratiating people to traditional arts. He managed the art consulting of Ulker Group and Beyoglu Municipal and he still frequents his mission as a jury member in Istanbul General Municipal Taksim Art Gallery. Among all of these works he also signed selected works on graphic design and visual arts. Gurel’s a lot of works of art take place in many art collections in Turkey and abroad. Currently he is the head of his center called Istanbul Art House, meantime he keeps going his painting works, individual works and traditional art researches on calligraphy, ebru (marbling), miniature and illuminated manuscript (tezhip). Gurel, cares exclusively about his educative identity to train students in these areas. One of his principal is organizing rare individual exhibitions and he attended a few mixed exhibitions. His unique abstract artworks are meant to be read by above writings of existentialism (ontology). He has a high opinion to benefit from ancient traditions, meanwhile he keeps going his paintings in contemporial manner.
