In January 2012, he was elected to serve on the Bonita Springs City Council, and in March 2016, he was elected Mayor of Bonita Springs, an office he currently holds.
Early life
Simmons grew up in North Hampton, New Hampshire and spent his formative years on the New Hampshire seacoast. He frequently traveled between Southwest Florida and the Northeast, before re-locating permanently to Bonita Springs, FL.
Politics
Simmons is a self-described fiscal conservative and government reformer. Locally in Bonita Springs, he is an advocate of home rule for all citizens, building a high school in Bonita Springs, and "smart" economic and job growth. As a city council member he also initiated millions of dollars of enhanced landscaping citywide. He also supports expanded gaming in the area as a way to bring more jobs in and grow the economy. During his mayoral campaign, Simmons said he is in favor of "The government lite approach, keep taxes low, keep spending low. So it doesn't overburden our taxpayers."
Career
From 1997 to 2000, Simmons served as Chief of Staff for the Michigan Legislature, before relocating to Southwest Florida.
In December 2000, Simmons was offered a position in the White House under President George W. Bush but he turned it down to focus on starting his young family with his wife, SueZahn.
Simmons is a member of the Bonita Springs Lions Club, Bonita Springs Historical Society, and the Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce.
After publicly announcing his decision not to run for Mayor of Bonita Springs in 2016, Simmons reversed course and ran anyway, saying "After countless phone calls from supporters and long discussions with my wife and children, we agree that entering the race for mayor is the right thing to do for our friends and neighbors across Bonita Springs."
In Spring 2016, Simmons joined Thrive Media Inc. of Bonita Springs, FL, as a political strategy and investment consultant.
Family
Simmons is married to his wife, SueZahn, and has two children, Ellie and Petey.
