Playing career
A teammate of fellow Rockie Troy Tulowitzki at Long Beach State, Burgess never played for a Major or Minor League team. He instead had a brief career in independent ball.
In 2008, he appeared in all 19 games for the San Diego Surf Dogs of the Arizona Winter League. Primarily a catcher, he also made appearances at first base and in the outfield. He posted a .333 batting average in 67 plate appearances with 4 home runs and 14 RBIs.
Also in 2008, he played in 53 games for the Texarkana Gunslingers of the now-defunct Continental Baseball League. While he played a few games at catcher, he was primarily a left fielder with a few additional games played at third base. In 201 plate appearances, he posted a .238 average with one home run and 15 RBIs.
