Parlus is a free social networking website with its roots in Ireland though it is aimed at English-speakers worldwide over the age of 15. It was launched in August 2008. The site is a revamp of the Web 1.0 Schoolfriends.ie which was launched in 2002 and focussed on reuniting people who had attended schools, colleges & universities in Ireland. Its new domain name derives from the Irish word - parlús - for parlour or social salon, a place where people gather to talk and network.
The site is at the forefront of the latest wave of internet business innovation in which members are encouraged to become prosumers rather than mere consumers. Parlus subscribes to the Wikinomics-based business model by awarding points for a range of social networking activities. Committed, active users can thus qualify to become advocate shareholders.
