Parimelazhagan Thangaraj

Parimelazhagan Thangaraj currently working as a Professor in the Department of Botany, Bharathiar University. He is well known for his expertise in the field of phytomedicine and Bioprospecting of medicinal plants. He has committed his research to analyze and isolating various phytocompounds and evaluate valuable properties from traditional medicinal plants. The current activities in several research fields include phytomedicine, pharmacology, ethnomedicine, plant biochemistry, physiology and cancer biology.
Early life and education
Parimelazhagan was born on 16 June 1973, Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, India. He completed his schooling at St. Xavier Higher Secondary School, Purathakudi and later the Little Flower Higher Secondary School in Annamangalam. He completed his graduation (1990-1993) from St.Joseph's College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli and PhD from Bharathiar University under the guidance of Dr K. Francis.
Professional career
Parimelazhagan has worked as a Scientist at Ladakh in Defence Research & Development Organization, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India. He has also worked as a Scientist in the Rubber Research Institute of India, Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India, Tura, Meghalaya. He joined Bharathiar University as a Reader in 2008. During this period, he received his doctorate and was further promoted as Associate Professor and Professor in 2011 and 2014, respectively. He was awarded Raman Fellowship for Post-Doctoral Research in 2014 for Indian Scholars in Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Hawaii, Hilo, USA by University Grand Commission, Govt. of India, and he researched for one year at Hawaii. Added to the credits, he had authored few books and book chapters in his field of specialization. His innovative research outcomes converted into patents, and three patents are granted to him. He has published more than 110 research publications in international and national peer-reviewed journals. Currently, he is engaged in the investigation to find out some novel herbal drugs and nutraceutical product to treat some of the most common human diseases like diabetes and cancer.  He has travelled to various countries in connection with an academic purpose, most notably in the USA, Brazil, South Africa, Sweden, Malaysia and Singapore.
