History
Pantokraator is an Estonian band whose unique style blends elements of progressive rock and folk music. The band’s catalog includes an LP released in 1990 entitled "Pantokraator I," followed in 2000 by a CD compilation "Jäi servi seisma… " ["Standing on the edge..."] and in 2009 by a new CD entitled "Tormidesööjad" ["The Storm Eaters"].
Pantokraator’s roots took shape in Tartu’s School #7, when a group of eighth-grade boys formed a band named "Propaan" . Members included classmates Erik Sakkov and Riho Kukk, with brothers Priit and Mait Karm. In 1983, the band changed its name to Pantokraator.
The band held its first concert at school on March 12, 1983. Aivar Otsing joined the band on bass guitar.
In 1984, Pantokraator won the "Tartu Sügis" ["Tartu autumn"] rock festival’s rising star and people’s choice awards, and was allowed to rehearse in the "Sõprus" ["Friendship"] youth center. Mart Moldau joined the band as sound engineer.
In 1985 Pantokraator produced a rock opera "Merikajakas" staged by Priit Karm. The show played in Estonia’s largest towns and was recorded by Estonian Television.
In 1986, Pantokraator made its first appearance at "Tartu Muusikapäevad" , which at that time was the Soviet Union’s most prestigious rock festival. Jaan Sööt joined the band.
In 1987 the band’s only performance was at the "Tartu Autumn" festival, because the band members were all conscripted into military service.
In 1988, singer Lauri Saatpalu joined the band. Pantokraator gave concerts in Estonia, and performed in Armenia and Latvia. They completed the rock composition "Rännumäng" under the direction of Priit Karm. The band also took part in the VAT Theater’s performance "Ma ei saa millestki aru…" ["I can’t understand anything…"]
In 1989, Pantokraator performed at the Haapsalu and Viljandi rock festivals, the Tartu Music Days, the Pärnu Fiesta International, and at Rock Summer.
In 1990, the band re-formed, with drummers Roland Puusepp and Peeter Jõgioja as well as guitarist Andres Moro joining the band. They produced the LP "Pantokraator I".
In 1991, violinist Romet Pott and bassist Kaido Soobik joined Pantokraator.
In 1992, guitarists Kalle Vilpuu and Viktor Vasiljev joined the band along with violinist Tõnu Raadik. Pantokraator took part in Ruto Killakund’s theater production "Pööre. Pirita Kloostri viimased päevad" ["Turn. Pirita Convent’s last days"].
Estonia regained independence in August 1991, after the monetary reform in 1992, life in Estonia changed completely and Pantokraator’s existence in its current form became impossible.
On October 13, 2006, Erik Sakkov and Lauri Saatpalu agreed to get Pantokraator back together.
In 2007 and 2008, Pantokraator worked on preparing new material and studio work. Singer Triinu Taul joined the band along with bassist Henno Kelp and guitarist Taavi Langi.
In March 2009 Pantokraator released a single "Metsavaht", .
In April 2009 the band released Tormidesööjad , a CD of new material along with a book detailing Pantokraator’s history compiled by Erik Sakkov. Along with the book Pantokraator also produced two CDs featuring recordings of previously released and unreleased songs.
The band has composed and recorded over a hundred works, staged two rock plays and won numerous festivals and music awards.
