Paleofuture means a past vision of the future, or historical visions of the future. Hence paleofuturology, the study of what people in the past used to think about the future. The word has a straightforward derivation, from "paleo" + "future", and provides a succinct description of what is a well-known, if not well-understood, topic. It has become important as a discipline because understanding why previous visions of the future were wrong may help to improve current visions of the future and make them more useful for planning and strategy. An example of current use comes from the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation which recently had a round table on the paleo-future of money and payments.
