Production
The project was announced informally on 18 October 2006 by Pratap Pothan who announced that Madhavan will be essaying the lead role in the film. The film was launched as Arugil initially and Vidya Balan was rumoured to be playing the lead role, reports also claimed that after their on-screen kiss in Mani Ratnam's Guru, Madhavan and Vidya Balan became rather close and Madhavan had persuaded her to act in the film. However Vidya Balan opted out of the film citing other commitments to other films she had signed up previously. Later the film was re-christened as Nee Indri and was set to star Madhavan and Trisha Krishnan but after two days of the original announcement, Trisha opted out of the film citing problems with call sheets as she was booked to play the lead female roles in Vikram's Bheema, Vishal's Sathyam and Ajith Kumar's Kireedam. On 26 February 2007, Galatta.com came out with the news that a newcomer from Boston University called Rukmani has been chosen to play the lead role opposite Madhavan.. However the film has been re-christened for the third time as Oru Naal Podhuma. The film takes its name from "Oru Naal Podhuma" - a song performed by the Carnatic vocalist Balamuralikrishna in A.P. Nagarajan's classic film Thiruvilayadal. The film was set to start rolling from April 15, 2007 and was expected to be shot in one shift for sixty days for a September release.

However, problems arose when the crew could not obtain visas to Canada leaving the film shelved temporarily. In June 2007, several sources came out with the news that Madhavan would be re-launching the project as director himself, therefore making his debut. The heroine, Rukmani was sacked and other heroines were approached. The recently retired actress, Shalini was approached but she declined citing that she was pregnant with Ajith Kumar's and her first child.
